Thomas Tuchel Questions Wembley Crowd Support Following Dominant Wales Victory.
The England head coach shared his sadness that the Three Lions team did not enjoy stronger encouragement from the home crowd during their commanding friendly win against Wales on Thursday evening.
The manager was pleased to see his side maintain their strong performance, with strikes from Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the opening quarter deciding the game. However, he was displeased with the energy at the iconic venue.
“We had limited sessions to prepare against a well-trained team and we performed excellently,” the coach remarked. “It could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We couldn’t score the fourth and fifth goals. It was quiet. We didn’t get support from the stands. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you give in the first quarter? We didn’t let them escape. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for 30 minutes, it’s sad because the squad deserved greater backing today.”
“I support my words. There’s nothing more than leading three goals up in a derby. I would have wished for a bit more support in periods where it is challenging.”
“After halftime, to support us, there was excessive support for Wales. It might have aided us to recharge, but that’s football and so be it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Display
Apart from risking a dispute among fans, Tuchel also caused a stir by excluding Jude Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. However the move was backed up by Rogers delivering another standout performance in the No 10 position and getting his maiden goal for his country.
“He plays his game,” Tuchel noted. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his position.”
Bellamy Hopes for Improvement from Loss
Craig Bellamy hopes that Wales, who face Belgium in a key qualifying match on Monday, improve after their poor first-half display.
“This is why I scheduled this match,” the manager commented. “I wanted to assess where we are. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? Today gives me inspiration.”
Injury Concern for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was taken off at half-time after clattering into a goalpost and is a concern when England play Latvia in Riga in a qualifier on Tuesday.
